Nia Gautama (b. Jakarta, 1973) is an independent artist, educator and writer, who currently resides in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Her works focus on women issues, feminism, and domestic sphere, where she executes in a range of media such as ceramics, mix-media, and performance. She gained her Bachelor degree in Economic Management in 1996, then worked for some advertising agencies. Her curiosity and passion in art led her to leave that permanent job with a promising career in advertising to be seriously focus in arts. She continued her studies in Visual Art in 2014 and gained her Master of Fine Art Degree, graduated Cum Laude from Faculty of Art and Design, Institut Teknologi Bandung in 2016.
Since early 2000, she has been actively participated in some exhibition in Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia.
She gained some travel grants to do residencies and exhibition overseas from The Ministry of Economic and Creative Industry (2012); Department of Education and Culture (2013); National Gallery of Indonesia (2016). Some of her ceramic works were collected permanently by FLICAM Ceramic Museum, China and Lawangwangi Creative Space, Bandung. She is finalist for Gudang Garam Indonesia Art Award 2015.
Since her presentation at a conference in Yingge Ceramic Museum in 2009, she has started to contribute art-related articles to exhibition catalogues, arts and lifestyle magazines, academic journals, and conferences essays. Her first book “Ceramic for Hobby and Career” was published in 2011 by Gramedia Pustaka Utama, a leading Indonesian publisher. She is also active involves as an organizer for a non-profit international art exhibition.
Started in early 2015, she encourage herself to curate and organize a group exhibition: TETAS : a practice, at Platform#3; and co-curated a group exhibition: [not]ARTofficial[?]: Out of Track - participated by international contemporary visual art artists and Ikebana masters and artists.
