Muara Tumbuh#2 is the developing artwork from Muara Tumbuh #1, that had been exhibited at MARWAH - a group exhibition of 78 Indonesian Women Artists - in Jakarta on 2023. The Muara Tumbuh #2 presented as a site specific installation, responding the gallery space of Sanggar Olah Seni (SOS) – Babakan Siliwangi, Bandung. The SOS’s gallery space was chosen as the place to present this work, because the gallery’s building shape is simple, not too spacious, and like a greenhouse – a building where plants are grown, also located in a forest park, so the SOS’s gallery space was deemed suitable for this work. The physical form of Muara Tumbuh#2, is a mixed media installation made from organic materials where the main work borrows the shape of a woman's womb surrounded by symbols of the sexes of living creatures. The womb represents a safe space for new seeds (fetus) to grow and develop, which will later become new humans. The choice to use organic materials is to align with the cycle of birth, growth, life and temporariness in life. The series of Muara Tumbuh, is not only a silent installation, but involves visitors’ participation to be part of the artwork. Visitors are invited to take part in watering and nurturing the green bean seeds which planted in the work, so they can grow well, and as the developing of the previous work, in this work the visitors can participate in planting, watering, and caring the green bean seeds on the available soils. This caring seeds (fetus) activity is a metaphor of nurturing the new human being with love, so they will grow and bloom into good quality human being.” Nia Gautama Bandung, January 2024 *The artwork of Muara Tumbuh #2, is a solo presentation and self-curated by Nia Gautama, as the conceptor, creator, and artistic director of the artwork. |
