SURVIVING THE IDEAL : Voluntarily Agony

mixed media installation and performance - 2015
@ Salian Art Space
Bandung

Picture
This artwork is inspired by an ancient Chinese tradition of ‘footbinding’, an action to bind the women’s foot that started isince their childhood, in order to keep the foot small, which was believed as beauty, erotic, and higher level of social status. The work described women's position who being trapped by sociocultural construction about beauty and higher social status. Women, no matter they are smart, independent, have a good career or just an ordinary woman, have tendency to torture themselves to gain such ideal recognition.
