This amorphous clay sculptural work, 28 sculptures in total, were created in 40 days, inspired by the natural creation – termites mound. Based on my simple research, the small creature of termites can build a gigantic mound. Millions of termites work incessantly, purging the surface of the red soil and mixing it with their saliva to make the most amazing forms.

Termites construct these mounds even though they are totally blind. They don't need eyes. This is an evidence that The Almighty is very powerful. Those who are blind, deaf, disabled, marginalized - all is capable of and have chance in creating  miraculous works.

Naturally, another role of the termites are as destroyers. From the outer surface of woods, it might look smooth but inside the woods are rotten and damp and termite infested.

This artwork is as a metaphor of the embezzlers or the corruptors, who for all accounts and purposes may look like a pleasant men in their appearance, but the truth is they build their own castle furtively,  which causes losses to the country and the people.

These sculptures were made from raw earthenware clay. In my concept, raw clay itself, also has the right to appear.

* This exhibition was an extension of the concept I developed in the exhibition titled “Come and Play in our Backyard", at the Japan Foundation in 2006.
* The title of “Wondroushelter” is a pun from wondrous shelter.
* The above description was excerpted from an interview by Mrs. Eilish Kidd, The Jakarta Post journalist, under the title “Wondrous Shelter: It's art infested with termites”
